Senior Tech Reporter
Location: New York, NY
Observer is looking for an ambitious, experienced, and deeply curious reporter to cover the ever-expanding world of big and emerging tech, the power players within it, and its overlap with media, business, and the way we live. The ideal candidate will have experience responding to the daily demands of a rapidly-changing news cycle, with the ability to turn sharp, clean, engaging copy under considerable time pressure. We’re not looking to review the new iPhone or Alexa, but we are definitely concerned about how much they’re eavesdropping on us.
-Publish 2+ stories every day, finding the right balance between quick news hits with an angle and at least one mid-length reported feature per week, along with bigger long-term projects.
-Write with restrained flair, a knowing wink, and an eye skeptical of how technology is affecting our world and our lives -Leverage inside sources to break news whenever possible
-Secure interviews with the major players and the people behind the people who are driving decision-making, growth and innovation at the biggest and most influential companies in technology, including Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Twitter and Uber.
-Always have an eye towards who’s going to shake things up next
-3-5 years reporting experience, ideally in the tech/media space
-Significant time spent in hard news settings, but also the ability to write with voice and style
-Understands the difference between deeply informed commentary and hot takes
-Have something to say
-Advanced grasp of story architecture, for pieces big and small
-Legitimately loves leveraging audience data to help inform editorial decisions, but also understands its limitations and dangers
-Be extremely not-boring
