Freelance Auto Reviewer
Observer readers respond to stories that connect automobiles to design, culture, technology, luxury, sustainability, personalities and trends, not just the specs. We’re seeking a regular freelance reporter to cover luxury cars primarily through reviews with occasional ranked lists, comparison pieces and trend- and design-driven features. Candidates should be able to commit to two to three stories per month.
This is a role for an early- to mid-career automotive or lifestyle journalist looking to develop their expertise in the media industry. The ideal candidate can situate a vehicle within broader cultural narratives, has a strong sense of design and aesthetics and is able to write about technical details of luxury automobiles without jargon or condescension. At its core, this beat is about evaluating driving dynamics (ride, handling, acceleration, braking); analyzing comfort, materials, ergonomics and technology; and contextualizing vehicles against competitors and class benchmarks.
We’re looking for a reporter/reviewer with:
At least two years of experience in automotive and/or luxury lifestyle journalism and a track record for writing for reputable news outlets.
A clean driving record.
Knowledge of new releases, luxury and performance market shifts, EV trends, sustainability claims and realities and buying trends.
Experience coordinating with automakers and press fleets, and a track record of professionalism when working with automakers and PR teams (including respect for embargoes and responsible handling of press vehicles).
The ability to write in a confident, accessible voice that fits Observer’s culture and lifestyle coverage and to think about headlines, framing and service angles that resonate with HNW readers.
High journalistic standards, attention to detail and the skeptical heart of a fact-checker.
Our standard rate is $250 to $350 per article for 600-800 words. Higher rates may be negotiable for exclusives access to specialty vehicles and longer features. This role is limited to U.S.-based applicants. To apply, please send your resume to jobs@observer.com with “Your Full Name—Auto Reporter” in the subject line, along with three to five relevant writing samples and/or a link to a personal portfolio. In your email, please include one or two short pitches for auto stories you would want to write in the next month.
