Freelance Watches Writer

Observer is looking for a regular freelance writer to cover the latest in luxury timepieces, including important watches coming to auction and notable auction results, what’s trending among collectors, lists of the most coveted timepieces and more. We’re seeking someone fascinated not only by the latest developments in watch collecting but also the companies, collectors and sales that shift the market.

This is a role for an early- or mid-career culture, fashion or lifestyle journalist looking to develop their expertise in horology. The ideal candidate will possess an insatiable curiosity and a network of sources within this specific collectibles niche. They should also have a good understanding of the auction world and the luxury accessory and antiques markets.

We’re looking for a reporter who can see the big picture but embraces the details and is entrepreneurial in finding and pitching stories. You will be expected to track major auction houses and dealers, monitor new releases and collaborations from legacy brands and independents and identify emerging collecting trends.

We’re looking for a reporter with:

  • Familiarity with major watch brands, independents and key complications.

  • The ability to translate technical watchmaking language for a general luxury audience

  • At least two years of experience in culture, fashion or lifestyle journalism and a track record for writing for reputable news outlets.

  • A facility for writing both breaking news and longer stories or lists.

  • An eagerness to find and pitch story ideas regularly.

  • High journalistic standards, attention to detail and the skeptical heart of a fact-checker.

Our standard rate is $250 to $350 per article for 600-800 words. Higher rates may be negotiable for exclusives and longer features. This role is limited to U.S.-based applicants. To apply, please send your resume to jobs@observer.com with “Your Full Name—Watches writer” in the subject line, along with three to five relevant writing samples and/or a link to a personal portfolio. In your email, please include one or two short pitches for stories you would want to write in the next month on the watches beat.
